Timothy: A young leader raised in Lystra

Timothy grew up in Lystra as the son of a believing Jewish mother and a Greek father. The sincere faith of his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois marked his life. Paul invited him to join the mission, and Timothy accepted difficult assignments from Macedonia and Corinth to Ephesus. Despite his youth and personal struggles, he became a trusted leader and spiritual son.

Acts introduces Timothy as a young disciple well spoken of by believers in Lystra and Iconium. His family stood at the meeting point of two cultures: his mother was Jewish and a believer, while his father was Greek. Paul’s letters say that Timothy had known the Scriptures from childhood and had inherited a living example of faith from Eunice and Lois.

Timothy was more than a travelling assistant. He strengthened believers under pressure in Thessalonica, reminded the troubled church in Corinth of Paul’s way of life and faced false teaching in Ephesus. Paul called him a beloved and faithful child. His life shows how a young believer can be patiently formed into a leader able to carry demanding responsibility.
