The inscription of Agios Konstantinos Church in Menemen’s Mermerli neighbourhood has not survived, so its exact construction date is unknown. Sources suggest that it was built in the early 1800s.
It was built as a small cemetery church to serve the growing Greek Orthodox community in the area.
Years of silence
The church served the Christian Greek population of Menemen until the years before the War of Independence. After the 1924 population exchange, it closed because the congregation was gone. It was used for a time as a hospital and later as a warehouse.
Doors opened again
Restored by Menemen Municipality, the building hosted worship again on 10 May 2015 for the first time in 93 years.
One of Menemen’s oldest surviving historic buildings, it is now used for weekly worship, celebrations and cultural events. It has welcomed local and international visitors since 2018.
